Broken Plates

“Broken Plates embraces a universally decorative material and interprets it beyond vessels and light fixtures. I harness and explore the reflective, colorful, and eye-catching characteristics of blown glass for distinctive, modern jewelry and design.”

HISTORY

Established in 2013, Broken Plates offers a line of modern glass earrings, necklaces, and cuff bracelets. Gillian Preston blends hand-blown artistry, drawn imagery, and precision CNC fabrication. She explores the reflective, colorful, and optical characteristics of glass. Gillian earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with an emphasis in glass and drawing from the Cleveland Institute of Art. Today, her distinctive designs combine her hand-drawn illustrations with traditional and contemporary glassmaking techniques.

APPROACH

Gillian’s process begins in the hot shop, where she blows layers of bold color and molten glass into flat, plate shapes. The plates are enhanced with drawn imagery, which is etched onto the glass using photographic resists. Each plate is then cut by hand or with CNC tools. These processes create intricate cuts and versatile sculptural pieces. Finally, Gillian hand finishes and fashions these pieces into their final, wearable forms.

FUTURE

Broken Plates jewelry is available for purchase online and at boutiques throughout the United States. Gillian continues to design and handcraft her innovative jewelry as she anticipates expanding Broken Plates’ collection to include home décor. With her traditional glassmaking and technical skillsets, Gillian is also capable of creating client-centered designs, including large-scale glass installations.
