Dan Buchanan founded Studio Glass Co. to combine his background in digital fabrication, mold making, and studio glass. With years of experience leading advanced fabrication processes for an architectural materials company, he brings a systems-driven approach to design. Studio Glass Co. offers and diverse range of products including home goods and lighting.
Studio Glass Co. developed the Dual-Shade Pendants featuring kiln-formed glass discs and a central LED hub—designed for versatility, durability, and scaled production. Some versions of the pendant incorporate Dan’s powder printing technique, which fuses photographic imagery into glass using colored powders and screen printing, while others emphasize a clean, minimalist form.
The Dual-Shade Pendant by Studio Glass Co. blends sculptural form with refined craftsmanship in a versatile, modular design. This fixture is available in two distinctive styles: the Encalmo Pendant and the Printworks Pendant.
The Encalmo version features kiln-formed glass shades with soft, organic colors and contours that can be arranged vertically or horizontally. Its clean, sculptural quality highlights the artistry of fused and slumped glass, offering a quietly modern look. In contrast, the Printworks Pendant introduces screen-printed patterns made from colored powders fused directly into the glass. These richly layered designs lend boldness, movement, or biophilic flair—depending on the chosen motif—and bring a distinctive visual rhythm to the piece.
Both styles are finished with polished nickel hardware and include two dimmable LED light engines, each offering five color temperature settings to shift the ambiance from warm and ambient to cool and functional. Beautifully made and thoughtfully engineered, the Dual-Shade Pendant is a high-performance light fixture that makes a strong visual statement in residential, hospitality, and commercial interiors.
Through our assessment of his studio and production manufacturing practices, Studio Glass Co. achieves three of Monmade’s six dimensions of sustainability: environment, climate, and human health.
Producing in small batches in Pittsburgh, PA, using handcrafted and assembly methods that ensure efficient material use, minimize waste, and avoid overproduction.
Glass components are formed using low-impact processes and no-VOC materials, supporting healthier indoor environments.
Partners with a regional lighting manufacturer in Derry, PA to fabricate commercially rated fixtures—supporting regional production networks and enabling broader interior applications.
Fixtures utilize LED components, which reduce energy consumption and heat output compared to traditional lighting.
Studio impact – Studio Glass Co. is an artist-owned business founded by Dan Buchanan. Collaborating with regional makers supports component replacement
Learn more about Monmade’s holistic approach to sustainability.
Monmade’s holistic approach to sustainability is described by our Dimensions of Sustainability. Rooted in our team’s knowledge of responsible manufacturing processes for small businesses, our six defined dimensions inform our assessments of artisan producers and their products. Our producers and their products achieve a dimension when they meet one or more of that dimension’s defined criteria.
Using sustainable materials including recycled, reclaimed, or bio-based materials, prioritizing sustainable vendors and local sourcing, minimizing environmental impact of facility and/or manufacturing waste, publicizing sustainability practices, planning for responsible growth
Climate
Manufacturing at and/or within 100 miles of primary business location, using renewable energy sources, reducing energy consumption, reducing water consumption, measuring carbon footprint, seeking reduction of use of non-renewable resources
Human Health
Products contributing to safe indoor and/or outdoor air quality, using low-to-zero VOC adhesives/sealants/finishes/paints, products comply with specific industry standards including UL and ADA, providing adequate safety and personal protection equipment for employees, safely using/storing/disposing of materials and/or finishes, using and/or encouraging green cleaning methods for products, recommending responsible installation and/or maintenance of products
Social Equity
Business is women and/or minority owned, workforce is more than 50% women and/or minorities, located in an LMI area, hiring local workforce, contributing portion of profits to charitable organizations, practicing public stewardship, offering employee benefits, providing wage transparency
Circular Economy
Designing products for zero-impact, reuse, and the elimination of waste throughout the entire life-cycle of the product. A circular system often includes (but not limited to) using sustainable materials (e.g. bio-based, reclaimed), safe and efficient manufacturing, durability, using sustainable packaging materials, and a plan for end-of-life
Eco-Labels
Indicates when producers/products/ product components are independently certified/verified for their environmental attribute claims by a third-party organization; certifications/ verifications can be for single attribute claims such as FSC or multiple attribute claims such as EPD, HPD, and life-cycle analysis
